Calcium and Magnesium: Two Essential Minerals in Everyday Nutrition
2 min readShare
Calcium and magnesium are essential dietary minerals that frequently appear together in nutritional supplements. Although each has distinct biological functions, both contribute to several processes associated with normal muscle function and the maintenance of normal bones.
Calcium is particularly well known for its role in maintaining normal bones and teeth. It also contributes to normal muscle function, normal neurotransmission and normal energy-yielding metabolism. Dietary sources include dairy products, certain green vegetables, fortified foods and other calcium-containing foods.
Magnesium also contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal muscle function. In addition, it contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system, electrolyte balance and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Because both minerals participate in fundamental physiological processes, they are commonly included together in multivitamin and mineral formulas. However, their presence in the same product does not mean that they are interchangeable. Calcium and magnesium remain separate essential nutrients with different dietary requirements and nutritional characteristics.
Supplement labels can also contain different compounds of each mineral. For magnesium, examples include bisglycinate, malate and other forms, while calcium can likewise be supplied through different compounds.
Understanding the distinction between the mineral itself and the compound supplying it is therefore useful when comparing supplement formulations and interpreting ingredient information.
